When we’d finished going through Mr. Nicholson’s flat and finding nothing, I led Inspector Burrows back down to Mrs. Albright’s flat. “I’m almost tempted to let him in and see what he goes for,” I said as we paused to double check the front door and Kate’s locks.

“You’re only saying that because you know I’ll say it’s a terrible idea and not allow it while I’m here,” he countered, “So you’ll be quite disappointed to learn that I had already considered that idea and rejected it. How would we know what he came to take unless we were in his flat watching? And there isn’t any place from which to watch that would allow us to see what he was doing in more than a very narrow section of the flat. We’d either have to be incredibly lucky or fill the place with so many hidden constables that he’d be bound to hear the lot of us breathing and clear out.”

“You’ve put more thought into that idea than I would have supposed. Although I can’t say I’m disappointed that you found the flaw in it.”

He smiled. “I know logic’s the only way to be certain you won’t try it on your own.”

That didn’t seem to deserve an answer.

It was quite clear that Mrs. Albright had been waiting for the results of our search. She had the door open almost before we had knocked. “Did you solve it?” She sounded more hopeful than expectant.

Inspector Burrows shook his head. “No, I don’t see anything up there worth breaking in for.”

“Well, you’ll work it out in the end, I’m sure.” Mrs. Albright insisted on giving us dinner, then gave Inspector Burrows his choice of sleeping arrangements. He accepted sheets and a blanket to make up the bed in the little-used third-floor flat and bade us good night, promising to lock up before he left for Scotland Yard in the morning. It wasn’t until I was safely locked in my own flat that I remembered the third floor was where Mr. Nicholson had gotten in on his last nocturnal visit. I was quite certain Inspector Burrows had remembered that much sooner than I had.
