When weâd finished going through Mr. Nicholsonâs flat and finding nothing, I led Inspector Burrows back down to Mrs. Albrightâs flat. âIâm almost tempted to let him in and see what he goes for,â I said as we paused to double check the front door and Kateâs locks.
âYouâre only saying that because you know Iâll say itâs a terrible idea and not allow it while Iâm here,â he countered, âSo youâll be quite disappointed to learn that I had already considered that idea and rejected it. How would we know what he came to take unless we were in his flat watching? And there isnât any place from which to watch that would allow us to see what he was doing in more than a very narrow section of the flat. Weâd either have to be incredibly lucky or fill the place with so many hidden constables that heâd be bound to hear the lot of us breathing and clear out.â
âYouâve put more thought into that idea than I would have supposed. Although I canât say Iâm disappointed that you found the flaw in it.â
He smiled. âI know logicâs the only way to be certain you wonât try it on your own.â
That didnât seem to deserve an answer.
It was quite clear that Mrs. Albright had been waiting for the results of our search. She had the door open almost before we had knocked. âDid you solve it?â She sounded more hopeful than expectant.
Inspector Burrows shook his head. âNo, I donât see anything up there worth breaking in for.â
âWell, youâll work it out in the end, Iâm sure.â Mrs. Albright insisted on giving us dinner, then gave Inspector Burrows his choice of sleeping arrangements. He accepted sheets and a blanket to make up the bed in the little-used third-floor flat and bade us good night, promising to lock up before he left for Scotland Yard in the morning. It wasnât until I was safely locked in my own flat that I remembered the third floor was where Mr. Nicholson had gotten in on his last nocturnal visit. I was quite certain Inspector Burrows had remembered that much sooner than I had.
